An hour meter is a must have for every dirt bike. They can just about be found at any of your local dealers or from MotoSport HARDLINE HOUR METER. They wont even empty out your wallet. At about $40, this simple tool can be the difference between adjustments and a blown up motor. There is no need for batteries and it is easy to install. Simply use the provided screws or sticky tape and mount the meter to your licking. Run the wire down and wrap it around the top of the spark plug boot. They make a few different types of hour meters such as the basic one described above. They also make a little more advanced hour meter such as the HARDLINE HOUR/TACH METER.

One of the most important things to have done to your motor after work such as top ends and valve replacements is the motor break-in. There are 30 different ways to have your motor broken in. If you ask different people they will have multiple ways to break-in the same motor. I have found the best way to break in the motors I build is through the heat cycle break-in, 3 times. Throughout these 3 cycle you may witness the engine stall or even back fire and die. This is normal due to everything in the motor being tight. As soon as the motor loosens up and everything seats you shouldn't experience anymore of those symptoms.
1st cycle: Ride the bike. Go NO MORE than 1/2 throttle, with NO hard acceleration. Ride the bike until it is to operating temperature like normal (about 15min), then park it. Wait until it is cool to the touch (radiators). You want the motor 'ice cold'".
2nd cycle: Take the bike out again, this time go NO MORE than 3/4 throttle. Go through all the gears and short shift it. Stay away from hard acceleration. Get it to running temp (about 15 min), and park it again. Wait for it to cool down a second time.
3rd cycle: Take the bike out, this time go through ALL the gears, but don't tack it out. You can go as hard as you want in any gear, but don't hit the rev limiter. Get to operating temp (about 15 min), and park it. Let it cool down one last time.
After it is cooled down the 3rd and final time, take it out and tear it up, but still be easy on it. Stay away from the rev limiter as much as possible. Like I said, you will hear X different ways for break-in, but this is my choice.
